About The Island Project Farming & Education Centre
The purpose of The Island Project is to offer a unique alternative FARM BASED educational service for children and young people who, because of their varying complex needs, cannot attend full time mainstream school OR are at risk at age 16+ of being classified as NEET (Not in education, employment or training).
The Island Project currently offers placements to children and young adults aged 9 – 18 years, (within a grouped age, of no more than 5 years age difference).
Our Aim is to provide an innovative and comprehensive programme, which incorporates pastoral support, vocational practical development and academic qualifications within a farming & agricultural setting.
The Island Project believes in unconditional regard for others, striving to offer a person centered approach with the ability to “think out of the box” to find solutions that will enable our young people to achieve their full potential.
We deliver Aim Awards to learners usually aged 13+.
We deliver a range of different Aim Awards in Art, English, Maths, ICT, Animal Care, Woodwork and Sowing & Growing.
AIM Awards is an Ofqual approved Awarding Organisation. They offer a wide range of qualifications, which have been developed to meet learner needs and promote employ-ability skills. Aim Awards values and ethos is – we believe in promoting progression, with success as the focus of what we do.
Animal Therapy & Project work
We use therapeutic farming to engage with young people gaining their confidence and trust to enable them to function in educational situations and develop social adaptation. Young people learn about taking responsibility for animals, ensuring they are properly fed and have good, clean bedding as well as a safe environments to live in. This knowledge allows learners to understand how to caring for themselves and those they love.
Open Day & Fund Raising:
Because we are in the third sector, the social enterprise environment without any financial backing from the government or business it is incredibly important that we are efficient with raising money to ensure we can continue to provide our alternative education service.
The open day has been a successful event which brings all the local community together to raise awareness of what exactly it is we do here. By improving our public image year on year we hope to stabilize ourselves as one of the great local services to support.
We are always looking into new ways to fund raise, in 2012/13 we raised around £5000. However the cost of running a farm, looking after our animal welfare, providing projects and maintaining our equipment is expensive.
Our vision is to continue to improve our facilities and the education, activities and project work we offer. In order to do this we need to continue to fund raise.
